Scottish Folk Meets Brahms & Haydn
The members of the Maxwell Quartet speak two musical languages that they effortlessly blend together: the refined solemnity of the classical string quartet and the raw energy of Scottish folk music. “We believe that folk music is the root, the foundation of classical music,” say the four musicians, who first met as teenagers in Scottish orchestras. Founded over ten years ago, the ensemble is now one of the leading quartets in Great Britain and thus fits perfectly into this year’s country focus. What makes these four musicians’ performances so special is the authenticity of their connection: one moment they embody the spirit of Haydn or Brahms, the next they bring the rhythms and melodies of the Highlands to life with great verve.
