Our Bibliotheca Subterranea is located deep below Johannisberg Castle in the Taunus quartzite. A library whose shelves are lined with wines, not books.
This treasure chamber has been storing a wide variety of vintages from Schloss Johannisberg for centuries, as the ideal conditions for maturing wine prevail at a depth of 9 meters: darkness, 80% humidity and peace and quiet. Most of the wines stored down there are noble sweet. The naturally high acidity in Riesling combined with a high residual sugar content preserves the wines in the best possible way.
To give you the opportunity to discover the ageing potential of our Rieslings, we have come up with a unique tasting experience for you. In keeping with the 250th anniversary of the Spätlese, which we are celebrating this year (see magazine article from December 29th, 2024), we are offering you a wine tasting with matured late harvest style “Spätlese”.
We start the tour with a champagne reception and a guided tour of the castle grounds such as through our historic castle cellar to the Bibliotheca Subterranea. We then taste 5 Spätlese wines from different decades. You can look forward to vintages from the 60s, the 70s and the 2010s, among others.
