A Romantic Evening of Chamber Music
This concert evening in Johannisberg with the Fauré Quartet moves between sparkling cheerfulness and intimate introspection, bringing to life the full range of chamber music’s expressive power. Long a fixture on the international music scene and a regular guest at the Rheingau Music Festival for over twenty years, the ensemble is committed to the following credo: “Give it your all and play every note with the greatest possible expression!” With this aspiration in mind, the four musicians, in their joint concert with double bassist Nabil Shehata, bring Schubert’s only piano quintet to life: a cheerfully sparkling work that has become known as the “Trout Quintet.” This is contrasted by Schumann’s touching Piano Quartet, Op. 47, composed during his “chamber music year” of 1842: where Schubert sets lightness and sparkling flow to music, Schumann turns his gaze inward—dreamy, contemplative, and at the same time full of warmth.
